Over/Under bets — here you bet that the result of the game will be more or less than declared by the bookmaker. This type of betting is found in many sports, and obviously in football, along with the Handicap and other types of bets. The classic form is the bet on the number of goals (over/under). What are total over/under bets?

Over/Under — this is a bet on whether the result proposed by the bookmaker is exaggerated or downplayed. The most popular type is the Over/Under bet on the total number of goals in football. Typically, bookmakers offer several options, and the fan, choosing one option, relies on whether this possible result is exaggerated or understated. The chance of winning in this case is 50%. Take a good example: the SSC Napoli Champions League match against Manchester City. Let’s take the number of goals scored:

• Over 5 (odds 1.02) Under 0.5 (odds 10.50);
• Over 5 (odds 1.15) Under 1.5 (odds 5.00);
• Over 5 (odds 1.45) Under 2.5 (odds 2.60);
• Over 5 (odds 2.05) Under 3.5 (odds 1.70);
• Over 5 (odds 3.30) Under 4.5 (odds 1.30).

Bookmakers choose odd numbers, because this is the only way to determine the exact result. In this example, we have 2 strong teams. Here you can be sure that several goals will be scored, but do not exclude the possibility that both teams do not forget about stable defense. You are sure that there will be at least 2 goals, but the maximum number of goals is 3.

You decide to place an over/under bet of less than 3.5 goals with good odds of 1.70. If after the match 3 goals or less are scored, then the bet is won. With a bet amount of 10 euros, the win would be exactly 17 euros. If more than 3 goals are scored, then the bet is lost. Also in this case there are many variations. They work just like the example above. These are other options:

• Number of goals 1st half;
• Number of goals 2nd half;
• Number of goals 1st half team 1 team 2;
• Number of goals 2nd half team 1 team 2;

This kind of bets can be found in other sports, such as tennis, basketball and American football. Here, such bets work according to the scheme described above, not with the number of goals scored, but points. We will use a concrete example with the help of a tennis match between Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev: here we are talking about 2 games won.

2. The total number of games in the 1st installment:
   Over 8.5 odds 1.20 ; Under 8.5 odds 6.70
3. Total number of games in the match:
   Over 25.5 odds 2.10 ; Under 25.5 odds 1.60

Asian Total Over 2/total multiple of 1

Asian total in the standard sense will look, for example, as TO 2.0 (or TU 2.0): what does this mean? The numerical value is a multiple of 1. With this choice (for example, let’s take Total Over 2), if the teams scored exactly 2 goals in the match, the bet turns out to be “refundable,” that is, the bookmaker returns the funds deposited to the player’s account (the calculation is made with odds of 1.0). If teams score three goals or more, such a bet will bring a win. And it will lose if the teams score one goal or less.

By analogy, in the bookmaker’s line there is an Asian individual total, in which the bet is not on the total number of goals in the match, but on the number scored by one team. This is it which has the greatest popularity. The player is sure that the team will surely score one goal, but they doubt whether there will be a second.

With a simple European total, the player has a choice: bet on an individual Total Over 0.5 (ITO 0.5) at small odds or on ITO 1.5 at higher odds, but with a greater risk. It is in this case that they can choose a bet on an Asian individual Total Over 1.0 (ITO 1.0). That is, the player will win if the team scores two goals or more; lose if the team does not score at all; and will receive the set amount back if the team scores exactly one goal.

The advantage of this type of bets for a player is usually considered the ability to increase the odds without risk: TO 2 is always more valuable than a simple TO 1.5.

Asian Total Over 2.25 / total multiple of 0.25

This kind is also called a quarter: its numerical value is a multiple of 0.25. If the type of Asian total described above increases the odds compared to the usual one, then the fractional/quarter somewhat increases the possibility of winning a bet.

This option may also look like “total over/under 2.25 goals.” Sometimes the bookmakers record it as “total over/under (2.0; 2.5) goals.” What does it mean? Let’s look at an example with a bet on the Asian total over 2.25.

With this choice, the player’s bet is immediately divided into two (no need to count anything, the bookmaker automatically does it): half the amount goes to “TO 2” (Asian total), the second half — to “TO 2.5” (normal total). Accordingly, a bet wins if teams score three or more goals, and lose if teams score one goal or less.

A borderline situation arises if teams scored exactly two goals. In this case, half of the bet amount is returned to the player’s account (that part of the amount that is bet on TO 2), and the second half of the amount is lost (the part that is bet on TO 2.5).

In addition to recording 2.25 goals, there is a record of 2.75 goals. By analogy, these are two bets: on “total over 2.5” and “total over 3”.

This type of Asian total is not particularly popular in all betting shops due to the low intelligibility for players. However, it often helps to increase the odds compared to the usual total and at the same time risk only half of the stated amount.

Asian total in accumulators

Since the Asian total increases the odds in comparison with the usual (European) one, it is often used in accumulator bets.

With the Asian total with an integer (for example, TU 2), the calculations are simple: in the case of a return of the bet, it simply calculates with odds of 1.0, and the player gets back its entire amount.

Problems with the calculation of the accumulator can occur with the “quarter” Asian total. If the accumulator has “TU 2.25”, then the whole accumulator is divided into two parts: half of the amount of the accumulator will be calculated as “TU 2.0”, the second half — as “TU 2.5 goals.» This reduces the risk of losing the accumulator, but at the same time reduces the potential gain.

Let us show by example how such an accumulator will be calculated.

Let’s say a player made an accumulator bet of 4 events: victory of team 1, victory of team 2, TU 2.25 and TO 2.5. The amount of the accumulator is 1000 dollars.

The bookmaker will divide such an accumulator into two — each for 500 dollars.

• Team 1 victory, team 2 victory, total under 2.0 and total over 2.5;
• Team 1 victory, team 2 victory, total under 2.5 and total over 2.5.

Let’s say three bets (Home, Away and TO 2.5) in the accumulator played. In the match where TU 2.25 was delivered, exactly two goals were scored. In this case, the first accumulator wins, but TU 2.0 is calculated by odds of 1.0. The second accumulator loses.

What strategies are available for this type of bet?

To begin with, over/under bets are very popular not only among professionals, but also among beginners. Since this is a bet with two outcomes, the risk remains minimal, even though the odds are often high. Theoretically, the chance of winning is 50:50 — only if you make a bet deliberately and with the necessary information.

What form is the team in, what are the recent results? — one look at the table will help in this case. What is the composition of the team and are there any damaged players? All these factors can be decisive for your bet. Since there are different types of such bets, there are different strategies and tactics that we will present to you below. Let’s dwell on the classic: betting on the number of goals.

Goals scored: use of the average

Let’s take advantage of the statistics: in two seasons of the German Bundesliga about 2.85 goals were scored on average. The situation is similar in the English Premier League, with an average of 2.80 goals scored for the 2016/2017 season.

That is, we already have a basis for forecasts and over/under bets. But this does not mean that your chances of winning increase if you bet on “over 2.5 goals”. In most matches, about 2-3 goals are scored. But: in almost 50% of cases less than 2.5 goals are scored! The average figures rise thanks to such matches with a large number of goals scored! So it is not always possible to rely on statistics.

Long-term over/under bets

Of course, in the “long-term bets” section there is the possibility of over/under bets. So you can bet on the number of common points or goals scored in betting shops before the start of the World Cup or EM season. Such long-term bets are as follows:

• Will Frankfurt collect more or less than 45.5 points in the 2017/18 season?
• Will Germany manage to score more or less than 25.5 goals in qualifications?

In such bets, foresight is very important — get accurate information about the draw and stay tuned. Good intuition and a portion of luck also play a big role, do not forget about the unreliability factor of such bets. Be patient, as with such bets there will be no easy money. The odds in this case are impressive.

Other football over/under bets

Along with bets on the number of goals scored, you can bet on all the countable parameters, such as: the number of yellow and red cards, the number of corner goals, the number of goals of an individual player. Offers vary from match to match and from bookmaker to bookmaker. As well as for the bets already mentioned above, here you are also advised to get the necessary information and the latest news.

While bets on the number of corners are pure lotteries — bets on the number of cards can be very profitable (if you have the necessary information). Some judges are very willing to give out cards, and some do not. Such moments are taken into account by bookmakers, but even so, you can get ahead of any bookmaker and make a very profitable bet.

Asian over/under bets

In this version, two formats were mixed — over/under bets and Asian handicap. The principle of the Asian handicap: there is an additional function (cashback), this means you can return your bet and do not lose anything. And this is how it looks: while in the usual version odd numbers are constantly used, handicaps can have bets on over/under 3.0 goals.

For example: You are betting on over 3 goals in a Manchester United match against the London Arsenal. If total under 3 goals is scored, the bet is lost, but if both teams score total over 3 goals, then the bet is won. And then everything goes according to this scenario: if exactly 3 goals are scored, you get your bet back. That is, you are not at risk with a score of 1:2 or 3:0. Due to this option, the odds are lower than usual.

Live bets over/under

Sports fans loved the function of live betting over/under. Live bets have become very popular lately — it is not surprising that the variety of offers (cards, corners, goals) and the quality of the odds are also improving. Odds for live bets are always very attractive, so with good intuition you will have big wins.

What are the advantages and disadvantages?

One advantage for those who love tactics — this type of betting is very diverse. On the one hand, there are options such as betting on the number of goals, cards, penalty kicks and corners; on the other hand, this type of bet can be perfectly combined with other types of handicap, long-term bets or live bets. Since there are usually 2 outcomes, your chance of winning is 50%. If you invest time in the search for high odds, then you will definitely find them.

The biggest plus of such bets is the fact that to win you do not need to know the exact result of the match. A good instinct for an approximate course of events in this case is already enough. The number of offers in this sector is huge, and at the same time it is constantly growing. Disadvantage: odds are very low, even though the risk is still high. You can’t rely on statistics. They can show trends, but for each single case they are hardly suitable.

Of course, it is possible to make accumulator bets in the format of bets over/under. But it’s impossible to combine 2 outcomes of one match with each other. This option is only successful if you place bets on 2 outcomes with 2 different betting shops at the same time (with odds greater than 2.00). In this case, the gain is guaranteed to you, even if it is not large.

Regular readers to the blog will know one of my views is that there is plenty of value to be had during an in-play football match just by reacting to the events that are unfolding before your eyes. The market prices are formed pre-match and are often an accurate view on the match but once those players cross that white line anything can happen!

If you are sitting down to trade a football match in-play then the main thing you are probably looking to work out is if the match will provide goals or not. Most football trading strategies are all built around the event of a Goal being scored or not being scored and so it’s down to your match reading ability to help you work this out. Quite simple really!

How To Read A Match In-play

There are quite a few indicators to look out for that will help you to read a match and influence your decision on what strategy is best to use and most importantly, if goals are coming or not.

Motivation

You can try and get an idea of how motivated a team is by researching before the match but the best way to find out is to actually see what is happening once it kicks off.

If you are looking for a match with goals I would ideally want both teams to be going for the back of the net. Sometimes you get a team “parking the bus” and playing defensively. When this happens it means you are only really relying on the favourite to find the back of the net. If you are going for the Over 2.5 Goal line then you have to really ask yourself if that favourite can score more then 3 goals as you cant rely on the underdog to score one.

A good example is when a team plays at the Nou Camp against Barcelona. If you are looking for Over 2.5/3.5 goals in those matches you are really just looking for whether Barcelona can score more then 3 or 4 goals since you can never rely on those underdogs to find the net. So as you are watching a match unfold, have a good look at how motivated both teams are in trying to score a goal.

Tempo

If the match is high tempo then the action will develop quicker and that means teams will get to each end of the pitch quicker and goal scoring opportunities will develop at a faster rate. To judge the tempo you should watch the speed of the actual football as it moves around the pitch. Keep a close eye on how quickly teams are taking free kicks, throw ins and corners.

If you see that ball zipping around the pitch and teams eager to get the ball back in-play once it goes dead then you could have a good match on your hands for goals. Be very wary when you start seeing players acting casually around set pieces. Sometimes near the end of a match you might find one of the teams has “settled” for the current result. This is when they will start being casual with the play, taking time over goal kicks and throw ins and basically wasting time. If you are trading the goal markets and want another goal in that situation then you have to take a look at the team chasing the goal and assess if they are strong enough since it’s apparent that the other team has no further ambition of scoring a goal.

Also, listen out for the crowd and the tone in the commentator’s voice. When the tempo is high then the crowd is normally loud and responsive along with the commentator sounding excited. When it’s a slow affair, you will hear the difference!

Shots

You might do some research and then expect a match to be full of goals and then when it starts you see a high tempo which is a positive sign. However, the high tempo counts for nothing if there are no shots being made.

How Do You Read Over Under Odds

It is stating the obvious to say that “You cant Score without shooting” and so if there aren’t any shots happening then its not time to expect goals. Very often, If I am trading in-play and in a match where I am expecting goals then I will wait for the first shot of the match before I put my money in the market. I am not missing much by getting involved earlier and as the clock ticks on then I am getting better and better odds too.

There are some matches I have been involved with where there hasn’t been a single shot till the 20th minute and I have managed to get odds of 2.70 on Over 2.5 Goals being scored when the starting price was about 1.90!. That is a huge increase in value and taking prices like that will help you to profit long term. Sometimes a goal comes from nowhere and you miss it but then you haven’t risked any money either

If it’s late on in a match and a manager is making a substitution then it is something worth paying attention to. Have a look at who the manager is sending on as it can give you a good indication of how that team is going to approach the final stages of the match.

If you see a striker coming off and a defender in his place then its fair to say that the team in question is “shutting up shop” and will have less desire to go and score more goals. If you see a team sending on a striker for anyone then it’s a good indication that the manager is looking for goals.

How To Read Sports Odds Over Under 50

A recent good example was when Liverpool played away at Arsenal in August. With the match in a 0-0 stalemate going into the final 15 minutes, Dalglish sent on his star striker, Luis Suarez. A clear indication that he wanted to go for the win. The match changed after that moment, Liverpool were far more attacking and ended up scoring 2 goals in the final ten minutes to win the match 2-0. So if you were trading in-play that substitution alone would have given you a good opportunity to enter the market at low odds. I remember Under 1.5 Goals traded as low as 1.18 before the first goal was scored.
